IT was all smiles at the Entebbe International Airport as the national U-19 team that qualified for the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup jetted in yesterday.
Fourteen youngsters and three officials received a heroes welcome at the airport before proceeding to National Council of Sports headquarters at Lugogo for a luncheon organised by the Uganda Cricket Association.
“The boys have done us proud by qualifying for the World Cup. This is a historical achievement to Uganda and the local cricket association,” said UCA chairman, Latimer Mukasa, who was flanked by former NCS general secretary Abbey Lutaya.
Mukasa said that UCA has already started on strategies to prepare the boys for the much bigger task ahead.
Uganda will be part of the 16 countries that will battle against champions Australia in the next edition of the ICC U-19 World Cup scheduled for February in Bangladesh next year.
To get to the pinnacle, Uganda thumped Nigeria and Zambia before crashing Kenya by four wickets at the semi-finals in Luanda, Namibia.
The two finalists Uganda and Papua New Guinea will represent Africa and East Asia Pacific region at the championships.
Meanwhile, Tornado CC affirmed the top slot of the Castle Lager Super Six stage after beating Maruti CC by four wickets at Entebbe oval yesterday.
Nehal Bibodi picked four wickets and top scored with 35 runs to ensure Tornado remain unbeaten in the league.
At Kyambogo oval, Edward Musenze (45) and Solomon Sseruga (59) batted brilliantly as Africa thumped Kutchhi Madu by ten wickets.
Wanderers survived an upset infront of Nile CC after being limited to a disgraceful 92 all out at Lugogo oval.
ACC had notched 30/3 before the late afternoon rain forced the match into a draw.
