ABUJA 2003 are games the Bombers will be anxious to forget. Two bronze medals from six fighters is the worst result since Brazzaville in 1965.
At the last games alone, boxers reaped two gold, a silver and bronze in the country's total of six medals.
Light welterweight Sadat Tebazalwa was the last boxer to fall Saturday night, losing controversially 21-16 in the semifinals to Algerian Jilali Nasrreddinne.
The crowd booed the result after watching a close fight. It was a bad day for Uganda because, light fly Jolly Katongole lost the plot in the final round of his fight after three brilliant rounds against Ethiopian Ecepeth Endeikachen. Endeikachen won by a point, 8-7.
The only consolation for the two Ugandans was they qualified automatically for the 2004 Olympics in Athens and the Afro-Asian Games in India, that go with with a $500 bonus.
Drafted onto the African team that leaves for India next week are Ugandan captain light heavyweight Joseph Lubega who reached the quarters and coach Dick Katende.
Nigeria, fresh from a month's training in Cuba, are dominating the boxing contest so far with seven boxers in the final.
