UGANDA Kobs yesterday embarked on their journey towards uncharted Olympic territory with drills at Lugogo hoping to emulate Cranes’ performance last weekend over Mauritius.

The Kobs encounter Angola on October 25 in an Africa region Olympic first leg qualifier before playing away to Ethiopia on December 19 and Morocco on January 3 next year.

Six players, part of last weekend’s winning Cranes team will join the rest of the 18-man squad at Lugogo midweek. These include Assan Bajope, Henry Kabeta, Geoffrey Sserunkuma, Joseph Kabagambe, Simeon Masaba and Sam Mubiru.

Team tactician Charles Namakola is just as confident the U-23 side are a closer knit unit, who will exploit their home advantage in their group stage fixtures.

“We have devised strategies that should see us win all our home games and snatch at least a point away,” said Namakola.

Kobs qualified for the group stage after eliminating Seychelles 5-3 goal aggregate in June.

Statistics however suggest that Uganda’s campaign faces a tall order, the fact that the Angolans had an easy run over them in 2000.

Morocco, placed 36 on the FIFA world rankings, are favourites in the group though Namakola insists the challenge will not be unusual.

“The blend of players we have could match any of the other teams in the group and they are determined to make the nation proud,” said Namakola after training yesterday.
