The Vice-President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya (right), has rapped people who insult people with disabilities, saying a strong law should handle them.
“All of us are disabled somehow. But we should ensure that vulnerable groups, especially the people with disabilities (PWDs), are empowered,” he said.
Bukenya said there is need to exploit the talents of PWDs in order to improve their lives by maximising their potential.
He said the Movement Government opened space for vulnerable groups in Parliament and local government statutory bodies.
He said everyone has a right to free education.
Bukenya said with the enactment of the Disabled Bill, it would be easier to run PWD programmes from ministry to district level.
He hailed PWDs for supporting the Government, adding that the Government is committed to co-ordinate their programmes.
Bukenya said he would soon meet the MPs representing persons with disabilities to map ways of operationalising the bill.
He was on Saturday launching the National Union of Women Organisations for Disability in Uganda (NUWODU) five-year strategic plan at Elly’s Motel, Seeta in Mukono.
