PROVISIONAL results indicate Uganda’s softball girls have won a bronze medal on their debut at the Africa Games.

Softball, that was delayed because of the late arrival of Ivory Coast and a team allegedly from Ghana but reportedly assembled in Lagos, risks being removed from the list of medal winners.

The Ghana team vanished when the secret leaked.

The Supreme Council of Sports (SCSA) rules say that for an event to be a medal counting sport, at least five countries must be in attendance.

Powerlifting for the disabled, where Nigeria had already picked up nine gold medals, will now not count following the lack of quorum in the competition. South Africa protested the gold medal haul.

“We agreed on the rules for the 8th All Africa Games three years ago.

No one can change those rules now. We may only consider amendments for the 2007 edition in Algeria. Certainly not here in Abuja,” council secretary general Awoture Eleyae said.

“At least five countries must be in attendance.”

Only South Africa, Egypt and Nigeria participated in powerlifting.

Softball had South Africa, Nigeria, Uganda, Ivory Coast and that team from Ghana that did not appear after losing their first two games.

Uganda had lost twice to South Africa and Nigeria, and beaten Ivory Coast twice and Ghana once.

The four teams in Abuja threatened future boycotts if the Africa Baseball and Softball Association (ABSA) did not honour the results.

ABSA has set what it now calls the final today, between South Africa and Nigeria before the planned prize giving ceremony that Uganda will miss.

The Ugandan softball and baseball teams left yesterday for home and jet in at Entebbe airport today.

“There has been a lot of confusion but we are happy we got a bronze medal. I am proud the girls made this in their first big outing,” said Sheila Agonzibwa, boss of Ugandan baseball and softball.

The baseball team finished fourth, after losing 17-4 runs in the play-off for bronze to Zimbabwe yesterday.

There was similar confusion at the weightlifting event as it only started yesterday — two days late — after the arrival of International Weightlifting Federation head boss Tamas Ajan. Ajan had to get involved in organising the competition because he arrived in Abuja earlier than the African weightlifting bosses.
