The Sharing Youth Centre, Nsambya has acquired a new library worth sh60m, thanks to donors and wellwishers.

The building was constructed by Hoima Diocese Constructors with assistance from the French government which channelled the funds through the French Embassy.

Last year, after realising lack of such a facility at the centre, the former director, Fr. Paul Gigli, requested the embassy for funds to build the library.

The students found it very difficult to concentrate on their studies in the dilapidated building which they formerly used as a library. The education attache at the French embassy, Jean-Noel Jodeau, said at the opening of the new library on Tuesday that the students were always disorganised by the changing weather conditions.

“I remember coming here sometime last year. It rained all of a sudden and students dashed out of their former reading room because they were going to get soaked. It is at this time that the request was made,” he said.

After almost one year of hard work, Hoima diocese has fulfilled Fr. Gigli’s dreams because the library is in place now and is ready for use.

It comprises of a computer room, reference book section, reading room and discussion room. The French ambassador, Jean-Bernard Thiant graced the official opening.

In a brief speech, Thiant said that the future of the country lay in the youth. He urged the students to use the structure responsibly.

The Vicar General, Kampala archdiocese, Paul Semogerere who also attended ceremony hailed the French government for its assistance and promised that the libary would be protected.

Other donors who helped put the library in shape were Computers for Africa, which donated 13 computers and the British Embassy, which provided books worth sh5m, 17 desks and three bookshelves.
