UGANDA’S fish export earnings and tonnage for August dropped by 8% and 13.95% respectively, statistics obtained from the fisheries department have indicated.

Dr. Dick Nyeko, the commissioner for fisheries said last week, the catches during August were low due to drought.

“When compared to August 2002, this month’s (August) value and tonnage were low. The Nile perch catches were low due to the hot season and the low demand,” Nyeko said.

He said compared to July 2003, the volumes and values were down by 10.5% and 11.3% respectively.

In August, 1407.52 tonnes were exported to the European markets, fetching $435,621,123m

Another 510.76 tonnes were exported to the non European markets, earning $2093115.26. The estimated value for August was sh13.9b.

A consignment of 2142.95 tonnes of fish was exported in July, earning $7272483.37m, while 2087.65 tonnes were exported in August 2002, fetching $7495198.66m .

There has been an increment in the number of processing plants in the country.

Nyeko said, however, “The outlook for September is good given the establishment of other full capacity processing plants and the good season.” He declined comment on reports of scarcity of fish in the Northern Hemisphere.
