At least half the population in Kasese district do not have pit latrines, the district health services director, Dr. Peter Okui, has said.

“The pit latrine coverage in some areas of the district is zero while in other villages it stands at 53%,” he said.

Okui and the LC5 chairman, Yokasi Bihande, were recently speaking at a talkshow over Messiah Radio in Kasese town.

Okui said his department had tried to sensitise residents about cholera prevention but was shocked by the increasing deaths.

Bihande attributed the persistent cholera out break to cheap politics.

“Some local leaders fail to harass residents without latrines for fear that they would not give them votes,” he said.

Bihande defended his earlier statement that cholera victims should be prosecuted after recovery.
