THE Vice-President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, has advised Ugandans to respect elders and tolerate what they say even when it is not agreeable to their thinking.
He said elders were foresighted and their words are usually laden with wise counsel.
“Don’t embarrass them and never abuse them,” Bukenya said while speaking at Lubaga Archdiocesan Day celebrations held yesterday at Lubaga Cathedral. Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala led the mass.
Bukenya did not mention names but his words sounded soothing to Wamala who has been under attack from some government officials over his apposition to the lifting of the two-term limit for the president.
State minister for industry Jennifer Namuyangu recently asked Wamala to mind Church collections while presidential legal assistant, Fox Odoi said the Cardinal was treading a slippery ground by commenting on political matters.
But Bukenya said he is always alert when the Cardinal is talking because he has respect for him.
Wamala asked the faithful, who filled the Cathedral, to pray for Pope John Paul II.
“He is disabled, does most work while seated. and sometimes finds difficulty in speaking,” the Cardinal said.
