THE Violent Crime Crack Unit (VCCU) has arrested seven suspected gangsters behind a wave of robberies on the Gulu-Kampala highway, recovering a pistol with seven bullets and three toy guns.
The clamp down also saw the operatives arresting a suspected robber in the city on Saturday, recovering an SMG rifle and 24 bullets.
The suspects included Alex Mutendeke, Livingstone Makimera, Fred Bashaiza, Ben Tumuhirwe, Kibob Lukwago, Duke Olabu and Richard Mbaziira, the leader of the cell who is said to have trained his colleagues in gun use.
The suspects were arrested in Nakasongola district in a three-day clampdown that saw the operatives flushing the thugs from their hideouts.
Speaking to reporters at his Kireka head offices on Sunday, the VCCU boss, David Magara, said the cell has been wrecking havoc in Luweero, Migera and Nakasongola.
“Our squad is still out in the field to recover more guns,” Magara said as he paraded the thugs and displayed the catch comprising toy guns made out of wood and black rubber strapping.
Some of the toys had sharp pointed metal attached to their barrels.
“The fact that the toy guns have been fitted with such dangerous implements only confirms how deadly the thugs can be,” Magara said.
