JOSEPH Lubega remained Uganda’s only medal hope in the boxing discipline at the Afro-Asian games taking place in the Indian City of Hyderabad.

The heavyweight boxer used his heavy punches and good defending tactics to out point Korea’s Song-hak-sung 6-5 in the last light heavy weight quarterfinal bout.

The win brought a ray of hope to the 11-man Ugandan delegation that is currently in India for the maiden continental games.

Jolly Katongole (Light Fly) and Sadat Tebazalwa (lightwelter) fell to Kazakhstan’s Serik Sikymbayev (23-18) and India’s Vijendaer ( 23-9) respectively. The two are all bronze medallists at the just concluded All Africa Games.

The weightlifters were also caught on the wrong footing with Isma Katamba (62kg) and Moses Kimbowa (56kg) finishing fifth overall in their respective categories.

Irene Ajambo, a bronze medallist at the Abuja Games, athletes Dorcus Inzikuru and Boniface Kiprop are the other contenders for medals at the games.
