DISASTER struck again when three people died on the spot yesterday in a gruesome accident involving two vehicles at Namagunga on the Kampala-Jinja highway.

A speeding Mitsubishi truck registration no. KAQ891R coming from Kenya rammed into a Jinja-bound commuter taxi registration no. UAB 845M from Kampala.

The deceased were identified as Saidi Seburimbwa from Kigali and Banwell Muyale of Kakamega, Kenya. The third person, a woman, was not immediately identified.
The 11.00am accident left over 13 people seriously injured.

Screams and yelps cut through the air in the usually quiet area as residents rushed to find the mangled commuter taxi with people trapped inside screaming for help.
Shortly after rescuing the survivors, the wreckage was engulfed in flames which emitted a thick cloud of smoke.

Traffic came to a standstill for over one hour. The fire brigade crew from Kampala arrived at 1:21pm, hours after the incident.

“I was sleeping and suddenly heard people screaming. The next thing I knew I was in hospital,” Edwin Kiibi, 23, one of the survivors who was admitted to Kawolo Hospital, said.

Some of the injured were referred to Mulago Hospital from Kawolo.
Mukono Police traffic officer James Mukooli said, “The speeding truck, loaded with boxes of merchandise for Strat Pack Uganda ltd., lost control and rammed into the taxi that was moving at an equally high speed.”

He, however, said investigations into the exact cause of the accident are going on.

Those who were admitted to Kawoolo Hospital included Ssemuwemba, 23, Ibrahim Lule, 23, Alii Kiyanja, Lillian Nantubwe of Kansanga, Agatha Baraza and Silas Ayalo a student at Makerere University based in Kampala.

Those admitted to Mulago Hospital were Darius Onyokoro, Josephine Otagu and Christopher Omarango.

By press time, the truck and the wreckage of the commuter taxi were still at the scene. The bodies were taken to Kawolo Mortuary.
