SIR— After learning that it is possible the victims of the recent Nalubale Dam accident could have been alive 10 minutes after their vehicle plunged into the River Nile, I wish to share these useful tips about survival in case one is trapped inside a vehicle under water.

When a vehicle plunges into water, instinctively one would roll up all the windows to stop water from entering. But soon you would be deprived of oxygen and soon suffocate. The other option would be to try and open the doors and flee, but this is not possible because the pressure of water on the outside of the doors cannot allow them to open. In such a situation, what one needs to do is to roll down the windows a little bit and allow some water into the vehicle, such that when the water pressure on both sides of the doors is about equal, the doors can easily open. However, this is just part of the solution because after getting out of the vehicle and you do not know how to swim you would still be in trouble.
This is a simple scientific
principle which has saved a number of lives in the developed world and I thought it was worth sharing.
