SPENDING US$60,000 on an advertisement in a French newspaper has earned Kampala City Council (KCC) US$7m (about sh14b) from France for a sanitation project, mayor John Ssebaana Kizito said on Friday.

KCC on July 9 placed a half-page advertisement in Le Monde, one of the most respected newspapers in Europe. The newspaper had carried a supplement on Uganda.

Ssebaana said, “We had to show the French government what Kampala looks like.
“The government came out to solve our sanitation problem. People out there need to know what Uganda is because some people think it is still under Amin.”
He was launching the Kampala Urban Sanitation Project (KUSP) at City Hall.

He said the French appreciated the project and had released some of the money.
Ssebaana handed over six motorcycles worth sh30m to KUSP supervisors.

Ssebaana said under the project, clean water facilities would be introduced and modern pit latrines constructed.

The project manager, Dr. Dan Twebaze, said the project was to be implemented in 35 parishes.
