Over 14 million children and mothers including foreigners were covered in the mass national measles immunisation exercise between October 15 and 19, reports Richard Komakech.

Health state minister Capt. Mike Mukula released the results on Friday, indicating coverage of 100%.

Several districts extended the exercise up to the October 23 to ensure maximum target.
Yumbe, Moyo, Pader, Katakwi, Moroto, Kotido, Kitgum, Kalangala and Adjumani districts did not attain the expected coverage.

Kampala had the highest number of children immunised at 631,396,1531 against the targeted 629,865 children followed by Arua at 488,139 and Wakiso at 486117.
Mukula hailed parents for their support to the ministry’s effort to wipe out measles and other communicable diseases.

“Measles has been robbing us of our children, affecting more than 60,000 children and claiming over 5,000 lives. This has been so because the routine immunisation has been less than 90%,” Mukula said.

“I am happy to note that the measles coverage has improved from 61% to 78% between 2000 and 2003”.

The World Health Organisation, UNICEF, American Red Cross, and the American Centre for Disease Control supported the campaign said to the biggest anti-measles campaign in Uganda.
