TORNADO beat Maruti by a comprehensive nine wickets to lift the Castle Lager champions’ trophy at Lugogo oval yesterday.
Keith Legesi’s side also bagged sh1m cash prize from Castle Lager, the national league sponsors.
Joel Olweny also played a telling role to lead dominant Tornado to their third trophy of the season, after the Mawanda Cup and the league.
Tornado also maintained an unbeaten record in the second edition of the Castle Lager league. It was the third time they humbled new comers Maruti CC in the season.
Upper order batsman Olweny knocked an unbeaten 57 runs off 28 balls, hitting 10 boundaries and a six off left arm bowler Henry Kato.
Maruti, who won the toss and opted to bat, suffered an early collapse with openers Bharat Godhadra and Arthur Kyobe leaving the crease cheaply.
It was Richard Okia who stood the tough examination of Tornado bowlers, hitting an unbeaten 41 off 104 balls to save the side from collapsing below 50 runs.
The national batsman hit four boundaries, including two sixes, against Nand Kishore and Frank Nsubuga on a pitch that had an uneven bounce.
The purposeful bowling of Charles Waiswa (3/8), Patrick Ochan (2/20) and Kishore (3/27) ensured five of Maruti batsmen leave the crease for ducks.
Opener Michael Ndiko prolonged the death for Maruti with an unbeaten slow 10 runs off 48 balls, leaving the strike to Olweny who started hitting reckless shots after surviving a catch at 21 runs, where he was dropped by Yona Wapakhabulo in the slips.
Tornado were handed their trophy by the Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) chairman Latimer Mukasa flanked by his secretary Joseph Bagabo and Castle Lager representative Andrew Chappell.
