THE army in Kitgum has said it rescued 25 abductees from a group of the Lord’s Resistance Army rebels under Kepere, a self-styled commander who was leading his group into southern Sudan.

The army said Kapere had abducted 100 people who he was using to carry foodstuffs looted from Teso.

The commander of the UPDF 503 Brigade based at Pajimo in Kitgum, Lt. Col. Sam Kiwanuka, said the army cornered the rebels from Pawena, Tuma-Ngur and at Adyaka.
“The rebel group intended to cross into Sudan with the abductees but we managed to disperse them,” Kiwanuka said.

He said Kapere’s group on Wednesday ambushed and set ablaze a UAF 224D Pajero vehicle belonging to Madi-Opei Catholic Parish priest Matthew Okun Lagoro at Kuda-Ada, five miles to Madi-Opei trading centre.

Lagoro on Monday told The New Vision he was not hit by bullets as was earlier reported by other local media. Lagoro said he sustained injuries as he fled the scene.

He said a mini Mercedes Benz lorry belonging to Torit Diocese was also set ablaze. Lagoro said no one was killed in the Sudan registered vehicle.

Meanwhile, Kiwanuka said the UPDF was constantly monitoring border spots which it suspected were being used by the rebels.
