NATIONAL water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has launched a sh2.79b project in Mbarara district to extend piped water to three rural trading centres.

NWSC water development director Joseph Oriono Eyatu said the project would take eight months.

He said this while handing over the project contract to Eng. Nicholas Byekoma of Keystone construction limited on Tuesday.

Eyatu said Mbarara district local government was to contribute sh406m towards the three projects in Kaberebere, Bwizibwera and Biharwe trading centres.

He said the first 100 clients in each of the projects will be connected at a subsidised rate of between sh50,000 to sh100,000.

Eyatu said Bwizibwera town water supply project in Kashari county would contribute sh103m towards the sh940m.

He said Biharwe project in Kashari county, would cost sh650m.

Mbarara chief administrative officer Hezzy Kereere Kafureka told the new vision that the World Bank and USAID, funded the project.

Mzee Kitwe, 76, of Rwanyamahembe, Kashari county, said he had never seen piped water in his area.

“We have been using brownish muddy-water for consumption ever since I was born,” he said.
