GIANT sports equipment manufacturer Reebok is set to build a multi-sports acedemy in Uganda at an estimated cost of $0.5m (sh1b).

According to David Katumwa, the co-ordinator of the programme, the academy, which will be the first in the CECAFA region, is set to attract U-13 children, who will learn both sports and formal education. Reebok has built such academies in South Africa and England.

“It is at a tender age that a child learns. It is going to be full boarding with both sports and formal education,” said Katumwa while unveiling the plan at a press conference yesterday.

The Academy, which will be for both girls and boys, will at first help developing football, basketball, netball, swimming and boxing talents, but will later expand to other sporting disciplines.

Katumwa said that only a plot of land is hindering the construction of the academy, which will have a swimming pool, gym, basketball courts, football and netball fields, all of international standards.

“The sponsors want land with in 12km from Kampala which is not in a swampy or hilly area and is flat.

They do not need land that will make it difficult to construct the fields and they need a dependable company to construct the academy. That is why am leaving for China over the weekend to speak to one such company,” said the sports shop proprietor.
