Kabaka Ronald Mutebi’s government has proposed a sh6.5b scheme through which it will buy back land in Buganda kingdom.

This is intended to control the massive selling of land in the kingdom.

This was contained in the kingdom’s budgetary proposals for 2003/2004 financial year in which they expect to raise sh.9.1b.

Presenting the proposal to the Lukiiko yesterday at Bulange, the Mengo finance minister, J.B. Walusimbi, regretted the massive selling off land by Baganda.

He said the only way Mengo Government could secure back land was through buying of the kingdom development certificates.

Walusimbi said this would enable the kingdom control the buying and selling of land and also protect its natural heritage.

The kingdom expects to raise sh600m from leasing out land and another sh400m from ground rent.

The Central Broadcasting Station will raise sh139m and the Government will provide sh900m.
