The number of accidents on Uganda’ roads increases everyday that passes by. Every month, hundreds of people, both young and old, perish in these unfortunate incidents.

The most recent is the one that occurred near Uganda-Rwanda border, in which many Rwandese and Ugandans were killed.

The causes of accidents on our roads are many, but the most common ones include speeding, old tyres and poor roads.

Old or tyres in poor condition are disastrous because they can easily burst when a vehicle is running.

Accidents occur when tyres burst because drivers get scared and lose their grip on the steering.

Motorists both in Kampala and other places buy poor quality tyres mainly because of ignorance.

However, this will no longer be an excuse because quality tyres are now available on the market at very low prices.

Arrow Centre Uganda Limited is one of the one-stop-centres, where tyres in different sizes can be obtained. Located on Bombo Road, the company has been dealing in tyres for the last 30 years.

A company source says they import high class Michelin tyres for all types of vehicles on Uganda’s roads, including for trucks and graders.

“We bring to the country top-of the-range first class tyres from the world known producer based in France,” the source says.

“The number one characteristic of our products is quality. We have various products, which help to ensure that we are within the budgets of our clients.”

For every tyre one buys from their outlets, the company provides after-sales service. Their products have a one-year guarantee. To improve their services, Michelin recently trained some of their staff in tyre handling and fixing.

The source adds that this helps to ensure that the services, which are offered are the best. These include wheel alignment, tyre changing and puncture repairs.

Arrow Centre is not just about vehicle tyres, but also the entire vehicle because they sell vehicle accessories like car covers, seat covers, wheel covers, sports rims, tyre patches, repair kits tubeless valves and many other vehicle parts.

Other tyre types that can be obtained from the center include BF Goodrich, Stomil, Continental, Barum and general tyres.

Priamit Enterprises Limited also imports tyres. Located on Jinja Road, the company was established in 1983. Rajni Tailor, the managing director, says they initially sold various brands.

“We would supply anything that was demanded. As time went by, we became the authorised dealers of Bridgestone Firestone, the world’s leading high performance tyre,” Tailor says.

Today, Priamit has established a reputation of being the supplier of quality tyres and tyre related services in the market. Their clientele includes non-government organisations (NGOs), government, embassies and other organisations.

Tailor says a client’s tyre is their business. He adds that they guarantee all tyres supplied as per the manufacturer’s warranty.

“With our 20 years experience, we can cater for any size in the Bridgestone-Firestone brands. Other brands are also available on request,” Tailor says.

He says they offer tyre changing and wheel balancing services for free. Alignment is also done. The tyres at Priamit can be used on light vehicles, trucks, tractors and sports vehicles.

Other tyre selling firms in Kampala include Central Purchasing Company Limited, Tyre World, General Tyre, Good Year, Urea Enterprises Limited, among others.
