CRANES head coach Leo Adraa has said he is good enough to handle the team through the 2006 Nations Cup/World Cup qualifying group stages.

“That is rubbish (bringing a foreign coach). Any body who thinks of replacing me would be mad,” he said yesterday.

Adraa was reacting to reports early this week that FUFA vice president (technical) John Ssemanobe had revived negotiations for a foreign professional soccer coach.

Ssemanobe said the challenge ahead was too big for the local coaches.

“Why should somebody else enjoy the others’ fruits? We have to be considerate at times while taking some decisions,” said an enraged Adraa soon after arrival.

The national team, that advanced past Mauritius courtesy of a 112th minute golden goal, returned home yesterday. Uganda lost 3-1 but advanced 4-3 on aggregate.

The optimistic coach said he will convince FUFA of his capability.

“I will speak to the technical committee. It is always good that you are given time to study the team. Success usually comes when you are given the backing and with every player on your wish list,” said Adraa.

Adraa praised his players, and hailed David Obua for his golden goal.

“The character in the team was fantastic and I have to applaud every player who was involved.

We dug ourselves a huge hole but showed the strength of character to bounce back.”

Property Masters welcomed the team by handing each player sh50, 000 and gave Obua a sh0.5m bonus for his extra time golden goal.

Meanwhile, U-23 Kobs tacticians Charles Namakola and Jackson Mayanja will handle the Cranes as they prepare for the Challenge Cup.

Cranes team to Sudan: H.Kalyesubula, D.Onyango, A.Mwesigwa, M.Bukenya, J.Kabagambe, E.Balyejusa, N.Mutenza, A.Bajope, P.Obwiny, E.Watson, A.Tabula, S.Mubiru, V.Kayizi, T.Mawejje, Geofrey Sserunkuma, N.Kasule, I.Emuge, D.Obua, B.Zidane, L.Zakariya, W.Solomon, I.Mugisha, H.Kitagenda.

* Argentine coach Pablo Pasculi’s chances of returning to Uganda are minimal, FUFA secretary Haruna Mawanda told the weekly Nile Special Super League press conference yesterday.

“There are so many unanswered questions about Pasculli,” he said. Pasculli did not return from Argentina after the Rwanda defeat.
