THE State has dropped a sh1.6b embezzlement case against Harriet Kabayondo, the former administrative manager of AES Nile Power.

AES recently pulled out of the US$500m Bujagali hydro electric power project.

Richard Buteera, the Director of Public Prosecutions, discontinued the legal proceedings against Kabayondo, citing failure to re-arrest her after she jumped court bail.

Buteera sent the withdrawal form to the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court.

He, however, said the charges against Kabayondo, believed to be living in the UK, would be reinstated once she is re-arrested.

Early this year, Elizabeth Kuteesa, the CID director, said the Government had alerted Interpol about the possibility of extraditing the suspect from the UK.

Kabayondo, 30, was on August 7, 2000, charged with embezzlement of over sh1.6b, belonging to the company.
