THE Principal of Makerere University Business School (MUBS), Wasswa Balunywa, has said he does not want the school to break away from Makerere and turn into an independent public university.

“We proposed to Parliament to be a public university because we were rejected by our parent (Makerere University). We said let us become a public university. It is not our choice. It was due to circumstances,” he told journalists at the Parliament yesterday.

“I have worked for Makerere University for 20 years, why do you want to throw me out?”

Balunywa asked when journalists sought to know whether he was seeking to turn MUBS into an independent public university in view of the funding crisis.

Balunywa earlier had held a closed-door meeting with the chairperson of the committee on social services, Dorothy Samali Hyuha, at her office situated on the north wing of the Parliamentary Buildings.

The committee, which is in charge of the education sector, was set to scrutinise a statement from the education minister Dr Khiddu Makubuya regarding the MUBS funding saga that has caused student unrest.

Balunywa, holding a big bundle of files, told journalists after meeting Hyuha that he wanted to update the committee about what was going on at MUBS. He said their problem was funding for the 500 government-sponsored non-resident students.

Balunywa again expressed his displeasure with the Prime Minister and Makerere University Chancellor Prof. Apolo Nsibambi, the Minister of Education and finance minister Gerald Ssendaula.

He said during a meeting convened by Nsibambi on Monday to discuss the MUBS crisis, “I noticed they were conspiring against the School.”

Makubuya and Ssendaula attended attended the meeting.
