Naguru Housing Estate is being reserved for commercial development while Nakawa estate will be re-demarcated into larger plots for a modern residential housing estate, MPs heard yesterday, reports Felix Osike.

The Nakawa Division Council led by Protazio Kintu unveiled the re-development plans of the two estates to the MPs on the committee on public service and local government chaired by Anthony Yiga yesterday.

Tenants have been advised to leave leave the premises as per the deadline given by Kampala City Council (KCC). Nakawa and Naguru tenants were given 90 days and 60 days respectively to quit.

There is a petition before the Parliament Speaker Edward Sekandi from the National Tenants Union, protesting the move by KCC to evict the tenants.

Committee members Fred Ruhindi, Santa Okot, Margaret Ziwa and James Kakoza wanted the process halted so that more consultations can be made.

Kintu said although the tenants will be given preferential treatment, they must first quit the premises to allow for re-demarcations into larger and well-planned plots. He said politics should not be a focus in the venture.

“We want the land cleared so that surveys can be carried out, plans prepared and plots demarcated after that we shall send out invitations. It is difficult to do it when people are around. They must prepare to leave,” said Kintu.

He, however, said not all the tenants will acquire plots because the re-demarcated plots will be bigger.

There are 1, 524 families in both estates. 246 units have been condemned by KCC.
