THE governments of Uganda and Japan on Friday signed a $3m(sh5b) agreement for the modernisation of Ggaba Road.

Works, housing and communication permanent secretary Charles Muganzi, the chief engineer, Samson Bagonza, and the deputy city engineer Stephen Kinyira signed on behalf of Uganda in the Japanese capital, Tokyo.

Kiyoshi Sawai Company signed for Japan. Sawai is the general manager of KONOIKE Construction Company, the firm that is to modernise the road.

The $3m, a grant from the Japanese government’ is not for re-constructing the 8km road but for constructing drainage and installing safety traffic facilities like traffic lights, pedestrian walk ways and bus stops.

The works are under phase II of the improvement of trunk roads in Kampala. The project co-ordinator Godfrey Magala said the work in January 2004.
