THE European Union ambassador to Uganda, Sigurd Illing, last week opened classrooms, health centres and boreholes funded by the union in Busia district, reports Charles Opolot .

The premises cost sh564m and were constructed under the EU Micro-Projects Programme. The EU has spent sh1.34b on social programmes in the district since 2000.

Busia is one of the eight districts in the country benefiting from the Micro Projects Programme. Others are Pallisa, Nakasongola, Nebbi, Adjumani, Moyo, Bugiri and Apac.

Illing was accompanied by EU Micro Projects Director, Frits Raijmakers. He asked the residents to pay taxes to boost Government revenues.

The district chairman, Wanyama Oundo, thanked the EU for supporting development projects in the area, saying the district had limited sources of income.
