The Christmas festive season is here. It is evident that the amount of business activity has increased countrywide and it is likely to increase as we draw towards Christmas and New Year’s day.
Economists will tell you that the consumption habits of many people change during this season as people actually tend to consume more. Business people call this period “the season”, meaning the season to sell most.
As a result, their trips to Dubai, Nairobi and other places increase. Likewise, here at home, local business booms, with traders from upcountry coming to shop in Kampala. Even the small towns are congested with peasants flocking in to buy merchandise.
The Police however, also knows this season as one renowned for crime. Criminals know that with increased activity, there is a lot of money being moved around. If it is not money, they at least know that valuable merchandise will be moved. Besides, they also have to work hard so that they have money to spend during the festive season. Hence, there is expected criminal activity this season.
Although the police usually prepares for this season by stepping up security, there is need for the public to be more security alert and avoid becoming victims of crime.
Firstly, you should avoid moving with large sums of money without armed escort. Business people should employ services of private security organisations, while transporting cash and other highly valuable goods. Since there is likely to be a lot of money from a days’ sales, this money should not be left to accumulate to very big amounts before banking.
It should be banked in small amounts at different intervals, using different routes and people to the bank. Big amounts should not be transported to the bank on foot.
Traders who come from upcountry to buy merchandise from town, should be careful with their money or purchased goods. They should be aware that there are many pickpockets hovering around them. Beware of porters who are hired to carry goods to the bus park, for they can disappear with the hard-earned goods.
Traders from upcountry can transfer money by using bank drafts and electronic money transfer.
At home, security should be stepped up. Residents should become more alert at night and not take any noise outside for granted. Call the Police, if you confirm a burglary.
This season is also characterised with increase in road traffic and therefore increased number of accidents. Drivers should desist from overloading as well as overspeading. Passengers do not have to live at the mercy of overspeeding drivers. Citizens have a duty to tell a driver to reduce speed or else you disembark. You should also be particular of the general mechanical conditions of the vehicle you are about to board, especially its tyres, licence and insurance validity. Be alert.
