Not so many artistes have achieved what Mr. Boombastic has made in his 15-year old or so career. He has won a Grammy Award, the best award any singer would love to have in their award cabinet and he has sold over 27 million copies worldwide. On December 31, Shaggy will stage a show at Speke Resort Munyonyo and this will be his third concert in Uganda. He was last here in 1998.
To do the curtain raising will be Kora Award nominee Jose Chameleon, PAM Award winners Steve Jean and Ragga Dee together with Peter Miles of the One Time fame. The show will kick off at 7.00pm. Tickets go for sh20,000.
Shaggy is popular for playfully using his baritone voice to bring out the mood in the song. He has done this before in songs like Angel, Hey Sexy Lady and It Wasn’t Me among others. He is a king of so many genres including reggae, hip hop and rhythm among other upbeat styles.
The shaggy haired star who is known as Mr. Lover Lover by his female fans arrived on the music scene in 1993 when he released Oh Carolina, a redo of the Prince Buster classic. Oh Carolina became such a big hit not only New York but worldwide.
The song skyrocketed his career though his first release was Man A Mi Yard that he released when he was just 20. By that time, he was still based in Brooklyn and did not have any idea whether his song would sell. As he battered the mean streets of this city, one day in 1988 he decided to join the Marines and two years later he was in Iraq fighting Saddam Hussein in Operation Desert Storm. Joining the Marines was his last resort as he had tired of employing survival tactics.
Meanwhile back home, he was making some money since his reggae song Man A Mi Yard was selling. When he got a weekend holiday from Iraq, he recorded Oh Carolina while dressed in military uniform. The song sold a whooping 600,000 copies, a thing that prompted Virgin Records to sign him on a multi-album deal.
After recording huge successes with the Hot Shot album which boasts of hits such as the cheater’s album It Wasn’t Me in 2000, Shaggy decided to quit Virgin Records to set up The Big Yard Music Studio together with longtime partner Rayvon. Rayvon who prominently features on Angel will accompany the star together with music sensation Rik Rok, who are jetting in on December 29. The show dubbed Mr Boombastic Concert is sponsored by Club Beer, Mango, Protector Condoms, Speke Resort and promoted by Charlie Lubega’s Ange Mystique.
In 2002, Shaggy released another album Lucky Day, the first from his New York-based studio. This is the album that has seen him being branded a Woman Freak. Though it expands his reggae vision, Shaggy says this album is a tribute to women who have always shaped him. He singles out his wife and mother.
The 35-year-old singer who was born of Orville Richard Burrell and nicknamed Shaggy after a character in the 1970s TV programme Scooby Doo will countdown to the new year and then set off a fantastic display of fireworks according to Lubega.
