KAMPALA Mayor John Ssebaana yesterday said Kampala Pentecostal Church (KPC) was operating illegally.
He said he ordered the creation of an access road near his Sure House complex following a district council that all roads which had been blocked re-open.
“Kampala City Council (KCC) has never authorised KPC to operate as a church. We have been lenient but in our records, that place is supposed to be a cinema. They are supposed to seek approval to operate a church but they have never done so,” Ssebaana said.
KPC on Wednesday placed a public notice in The New Vision, saying they are the registered proprietors of the land where an access road was created.
The notice signed by Jenner Kyambadde, the KPC business manager, said the management of Sure House created an illegal road to enable them access their building.
But Ssebaana said, “That access road was initially a lane. Two years ago, the district council resolved that all lanes be unblocked to ease the flow of traffic on our roads.”
“I instructed my engineers to re-open the lanes six months ago but they were taking their time. Since I am the Mayor of Kampala and I make orders, I personally ordered them to re-open this lane and other lanes. Several lanes have been re-opened,” he added.
Ssebaana denied allegations that the road was created for easy access to his building.
“We are the planning authority. Whatever we do at KCC is agreed on in the council. My building is on the main road and all the entrances are in the front,” he added.
Ssebaana said the land where the access road was created does not belong to KPC.
