GODFREY Nyakana was punched back into retirement on Saturday.

Nyakana was knocked out in the seventh round by Tanzanian Oswald Maneno before his unbelieving fans at Nakivubo stadium.

After struggling to his feet on a cool night Nyakana, also a city councillor, announced his second retirement from professional boxing.

“I am tired and I have had it,” an emotional Nyakana said after the defeat.

“I am done. Enough is enough!” he said.

“I have better things to do in life, thanks for supporting me,” he added.

Maneno took the Commonwealth middleweight title elimination fight to Nyakana right from the first gong with thunderous combinations.

Nyakana’s passionate fans started doubting their star’s potential in the first round when a vicious right uppercut rocked him.

Nyakana sustained a cut above his left eye early in the second round. The unrelenting Maneno thereafter pressed down the attack pedal.

Realising that he was in serious trouble, Nyakana put up a desperate fight in the third, fifth and sixth rounds. In one of these efforts, his left hook threw Maneno to the ropes.

But in the seventh, a solid right followed by two more powerful shots sent Nyakana to the canvas with his gumshield hanging out.

It took Nyakana five seconds to gain consciousness. And when he did, he could not wait for Tanzanian referee Nemish Kavishe to finish his count. Signalling that he had got enough, he walked to his corner.

All the other Tanzanian professionals lost their fights.
