Nnabagereka Sylvia Nagginda has said about sh175m is to be spent on over 600 children who are attending the two-week training on culture and morals code-named Ekisaakate.

The Ekisakaate 2009, which started on Sunday at Seeta High School in Mukono, had targeted 1,500 children aged between six to 18 years.

However, only 600 had reported by yesterday morning, most of whom are in the Senior Four and Six vacation.

This year’s training has also attracted a Japanese couple with their toddler who want to learn more about cultural and moral rehabilitation.

Aloysious Matovu Joy, the spokesperson of the Ekisaakate, said about sh270,000 is spent on each child in two weeks.

“This time, we asked parents to pay sh150,000 per child and registration fee of sh5,000. The balance has been topped up by the sponsors,” Matovu said.

Matovu, who is also a commissioner in the kingdom’s education ministry, said the children will be trained in personal development, cultural ethics, diet, sanitation, leadership and religion.

They will also be trained in liberty, human rights, children’s freedom, sexuality and environmental matters. There are over 120 trainers.

Matovu said in June, they would hold a workshop for parents who send children to the Ekisaakate.

“This is meant to help parents understand their children more and instill discipline in them,” Matovu said.

He observed that the Ekisaakate has instilled discipline in many children — both Baganda and non-Baganda.

Matovu added that the camp has also benefitted various organisations like UTODA, a taxi body whose bosses also want their members to undergo moral rehabilitation.

Kabaka Ronald Mutebi is expected to close the camp on January 18. The Ekisaakate is not ethnically discriminative. Any child is free to attend.

The sponsors of this year’s camp include Seeta High School, various FM stations, Shoprite, Zinayi Textiles, Freedum Textiles, Fire and Safety Appliances and Tilda rice.
