EDITOR—I respond to an article published in The new vision of December 19, 2008 referring to human resource issues at the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) especially those dealing with the recruitment of staff. The writer was most interested in knowing how the selection of on-air presenters was done as he thought that it could be greatly improved.

I would like to state the following:
As a national and public broadcaster in Uganda, UBC obtains numerous applications for radio and television on air broadcast jobs. All applications are received and when there is an opening, qualified applicants are invited for interviews.

UBC advertises on its own mediums or in the print media for any vacancies in these sectors. Only those who have excelled in the entire interview are selected.

The selected candidates further undergo broadcasting in-house training to ensure they are able to communicate appropriately with our publics.

It is this process that has ensured that UBC has some of the leading TV presenters; radio presenters and anchors in the country today. In other sectors, vacancies are advertised via the print media and our own mediums.

The description of the job advertised and requirements are always well spelt out. Those interested have to abide by these requirements and hand in their various applications before the deadline to ensure their applications are successful. We ensure that the whole process is as transparent as possible.
