THE First Lady Janet Museveni has told the youth to abstain from premarital sex as the only sure way to avoid contracting the deadly AIDS disease.

Mrs Museveni gave the advice yesterday during an interactive talk with the youth at the annual conference of the Uganda Youth Forum at Kitante primary school, Kampala.

The First Lady founded the organisation in 1992 to empower the youth to make informed decisions in the fight against HIV/AIDS. It is also meant to enrich the youth with skills to handle challenges.
The theme of the conference was “Be the change you want to see.”

Mrs Museveni told hundreds of youth at the conference that since the HIV/AIDS scourge has no known cure, abstaining from premarital sex and being faithful in marriage was the only way to end the disease.

Although some anti-AIDS activists have emphasised the use of condoms, she said, “they have not been scientifically proven to be 100 percent a remedy to the prevention of contracting HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.”

Condoms are not readily available in rural areas, she observed and urged youth to be patient until they get spouses.

The African youth need to find and maintain their identity, and not to be influenced by peer pressure, the pornographic media and western culture, she noted.

Mrs Museveni expressed disappointment at the stagnating HIV prevalence rates of six percent in Uganda. She blamed this on complacency in society.

“Six percent is bad. Even if it was just one percent, it would still be bad. We should work towards an AIDS-free society.”

The guest speaker, Prof. Vincent Amigugu, said the youth need to dream big and make decisions driven by a positive character.
