The extension of electricity from the main power grid to Kyenjojo district has been delayed again.

The chief administrative officer, Albert Matsiko, said the district was frustrated with the delay.

He said several revenue-generating programmes were set up with the hope that the district would have electricity at the beginning of this year.

“We want to hold a meeting with Ferdusult Engineering soon to discuss the hiccups in the power extension project. ”

Ferdusult Engineering Services won the sh2.64b contract to supply 2,200 homes in Kyenjojo with electricity.

The project, sponsored by the Government and the Swedish Development Agency, was launched in 2008.

The permanent secretary in the energy ministry, Kabagambe Kaliisa, had said the project would be completed in December 2008.

Enock Kaggwa of Ferdusult said the time of completion of the project was not included in the contract. He said poles had been erected from Rugombe to Kyenjojo town council and the next phase of connecting electricity cables would start soon.

Kaggwa was optimistic that the project would be completed in April.

Kyenjojo district is home to several large tea estates and factories. It is hoped that electricity will boost tea production and save the factories of millions of shillings spent on running diesel generators.

When contacted, the energy minister, Daudi Migereko, said: “People should not be worried and should learn to take our word. When we say power will be extended, then it is going to happen.”
