EVERYONE desires to enjoy good health throughout the year. Little wonder many peoples’ new years’ resolutions include achieving physical fitness, shedding weight and getting into shape, not to mention beating stress. These demand increasing physical activity.

However, the current economic slump means that few people will be willing to part with about sh300, 000 needed for membership at a gym. Other people are just reluctant to leave the comfort of their homes to go for an early morning jog.

What better way to achieve your healthy desires than by shopping for appropriate fitness equipment? Dr Ntege Ssengendo, a sports doctor says; “Walking is one of the best forms of exercise because it is low impact, works the thighs and can be done almost anywhere.”

But before you power-up for an invigorating walk, you will need the proper pair of sneakers. The Katumwa Sports Centre has brought in new hi-tech fitness sneakers from Japan.

These add an extra spring to the feet as you walk or jog and they cost sh10, 000 a pair. Available in men’s and ladies’ varieties.

Running is a great form of exercise since it is aerobic and helps loose body fat especially on the lower half of your body. But running on a track (or outdoors) strains the ankles, knees and lower back and it might not be a solution for people with heart problems,” says Dr. Sengendo.

Are you looking for a fun exercise to help trim your weight especially around the hips? You may want to consider skipping rope. It's portable and really easy to do. Start by jumping 3 to 4 times a week (for about 20 minutes) and before you know it, you'll be burning as much as 750 calories an hour!

Skipping ropes cost sh30, 000 at Uchumi Supermarket and most sports shops and supermarkets.

The price includes a pair of resistant clutches for working the fingers and also a stretcher. Be sure to consult a doc first before skipping since the exercise works up the heart rate.

What better way to cut weight around the hips than using a stationary bike? It offers heart and resistance training, improving your health and fitness altogether.

Stationary bikes cost sh220, 000 at the Katumwa Sports Centre but you can also get cheaper, secondhand versions from outlets in Katwe.
