G4S Pirates started the rugby season with victory in the President’s Cup at Kampala rugby ground over the weekend.

Pirates beat Rams 22-0, Entebbe Mongers 5-0 before shattering Rhinos 24-0 to lift the trophy in the round robin competition that attracted only four teams.

Inspired by new recruit Andrew Mukisa, Pirates opened the score with two tries before Robert Mulyowa got the third and Bobby Bigamba sealed the score with the fourth try. Pirates won sh0.6m alongside the trophy.

Kampala Rugby Union Football Club president Steven Ojambo was however unhappy with the clubs attitude to the event. “The tournament was a success, but I’m much disappointed with the way some clubs pulled out of the event at the last hour,” he said.

“This tournament is meant to be a season opener for all clubs to test their players, open up their fans’ rhythm but if clubs like Kobs and Kyadondo who should have led others don’t turn up, then rugby is not on the right track in Uganda.”
