EDUCATION should be imparted in a manner that enables students to be creative and innovative, micro-finance state minister Gen. Salim Saleh has advised.

He said students are compelled to cram notes, leaving those who cannot easily grasp concepts at a disadvantage.

“There are people who are talented in other aspects but the current system does not cater for them. It is for this reason that the education system should transform,” Saleh stated.
He made the comments on Saturday while inspecting Everlight College at Bunga-Kalungu off Ggaba Road in Kampala.

The school, which initially offered free services, is run by Mrs. Specioza Suruma, the wife to the finance minister, Dr. Ezra Suruma.

It started in 2002 as a training centre for children, whose parents could not afford school fees.

Saleh said his own performance in Economics was poor because he answered examination questions from his experience in business instead of reproducing what was taught in class.
“National unity and patriotism should be part of the curriculum,” he added.

Dr. Ezra Suruma said: “Enabling students to be creative is more important than making them memorise concepts they do not understand,” he added.

Dr. Suruma pledged to teach mathematics at the school every weekend.
