What would possibly bring Capt.Mike and Gladys Mukula, John and Julia Sebutinde, Rt Rev. Dr Zack and Theodora Niringiye, Rtd. Brigadier Steven Kashaka, Pastor John Ekudu or Eriya Kategaya under one roof on a Saturday afternoon?

A graduation ceremony? A football match? A state funeral? You could keep guessing and get hard pressed to put them together at any given time.

In what promises to be a rare spectacle, they, together with hundreds of other couples, will congregate at Makerere University’s St. Francis Chapel this Saturday for a thanks giving service for all who have wedded at the Chapel from 1945 to date. The two-hour service takes off at 3pm and will be followed by a cocktail at the Chapel gardens.

In what is expected to be a moment of retrospection and inspection for many couples old and young, the service will provide an opportunity for hundreds of couples in attendance to relish past memories and perhaps create new ones.

Most importantly though, all in attendance will get to know the secret in wedding bliss, according to Rev. Dr. Canon Johnson Ebong, the Chaplain St. Francis Makerere chapel. Celebrated theologian and counsellor, Rt Rev. Dr. Zac Niringiye, also the assistant Bishop of the Kampala Diocese is the main celebrant. He will give a sermon about marriage and the reality of HIV among married couples.

“Since marriage is a learning process, the reunion will strengthen and even salvage some of the failing marriages. Much as we expect all couples to turn up and express the joys of marriage you cannot rule out the fact that some others are anguished.

We expect testimonies to be shared from the older generation to the recently wed on their experiences and challenges in marriage. Holy communion will also be held as one of the sacraments for the married couples,’ says Ebong.

“Those couples who feel their marriage has since developed cracks and needs to mend are free to contact us in private so we link them to our marriage counsellors who will share advice on keeping it hot,” Ebong says.

St Francis Chapel, he says, has started marriage fellowships where the couples meet the counsellors every Thursday and Friday, where the couples learn more about the virtues of marriage, and encourage one another.

Can you still fit in your wedding gown? Have you replaced that missing wedding ring? Can you still fit in your wedding shoes? Well, you might not have to squeeze in the wedding gown or shoes but any decent outfit taht will suffice. The rings are mandatory. Leave the children at home for the reunion, will serve to rekindle those, tender, loving and sparkly moments before the children were born. You could be in for a big surprise.
