THE Uganda Young Democrats (UYD) leaders at Makerere University have opposed a proposal to privatise the management of students’ halls of residence.

THE Uganda Young Democrats (UYD) leaders at Makerere University have opposed a proposal to privatise the management of students’ halls of residence.

Speaking during the 59th graduation ceremony last week, the university chancellor, Prof. Mondo Kagonyera, said privatisation of the halls would improve service delivery.

Moses Kirunda, the UYD coordinator, said: “Private companies are profit-oriented. If they are allowed to manage the halls, they will hike accommodation fees yet most students come from poor families.”

The students threatened to strike if the university attempted to implement Kagonyera’s proposal.
