The English Premiership top games are back on SuperSport following the collapse of rivals GTV, which won exclusive broadcast rights two years ago.

The demise of GTV last week had threatened to deprive Africa of Premiership football for the next five years.

“SuperSport has secured the licence to the Barclays Premier League Live Package A and will be showing these matches on SuperSport from this weekend,” the parent company, MultiChoice, announced in a statement yesterday.

MultiChoice offers Digital Satellite Television (DStv).

SuperSport already held both Live Package A & B rights for South Africa but only had Live Package B rights for the rest of sub-Saharan Africa. DStv has now secured all Premier League live rights for the 2008/2009 season and for next season.

MultiChoice has also agreed to offer discounted DStv decoders to former GTV subscribers wishing to view Barclays Premier League matches.

GTV dishes are compatible with DStv decoders and will simply need an accredited DStv installer.

“We are extremely excited about this development,” said MultiChoice Uganda general manager Charles Hamya.

“All soccer fans in Uganda should be assured of our commitment to making MultiChoice the most favoured service provider.”

Apart from the Premiership, SuperSport also shows the Spanish La Liga, French Ligue 1, Italian Serie A and the Uefa Champions League. They also show tennis grand slams, golf grand slams, athletics grand prix and Formula one.

The South African-based company also televises the South Africa Premier Soccer League, where Ugandan internationals Geoffrey Sserunkuuma, Timothy Batabaire, Denis Onyango are house-hold names. Goalkeeper Posnet Omony turns out for second division side Black Leopards.
