Col. Phinehas Katirima, the UPDF chief political commissar, on Monday said the Army week, which ends this Friday, is aimed at strengthening national security through improvement of infrastructure and participation in disaster mitigation.

He said outreach health activities had been carried out in the five districts. They include completion of staff blocks at Ntungamo Health Centre III, renovating the out-patient department and a ward at Rwamahwa Health Centre III in Rukungiri.

Katirima said other activities being carried out are family planning care, immunisation and vaccination, de-worming of school children, HIV/AIDS awareness and counselling.

The army is also providing wheel-chairs to the disabled people of Rweya, distributing condoms, providing treated mosquito nets, dental care, fumigation, and slashing of under-growth in forests.

Defence minister Dr. Crispus Kiyonga who addressed Ntungamo district leaders after supervising army week activities, said it was important for Ugandans to work together with the army to fight poverty and insecurity.
