THE bus transport project for Kampala city should be hastened, stakeholders have said.

Industry players said they current timetable for the implemention of the project scheduled for 2014 should be brought forward because traffic problems in the city need an immediate solution.

“There are many things we can start off right away because if the situation is to go on for another five years, the system will most certainly come to a halt,” they said.

This was during the World Bank sensitisation workshop on the proposed Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) System for the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area at Statistics House in Kampala on Tuesday.

Dieter Schelling of the World Bank said requests for proposals for the pre-feasibility study would be called by end of this month and they would receive the proposals by end of March.

He said the contract for the study would be signed by end of April and the study is scheduled to commence by mid-May.

The final report of the study is expected by August 2009 and the proposed implementation of BRT would commence in 2014
“The detailed design for the BRT, which is infrastructure and preparation of financial model business plan, bidding documents for bus operators and fare- collectors financed under the proposed transport improvement project starts in early 2009.

“Implementation of works under proposed TIP2 would commence in 2011, with an estimated cost of $5-8m per kilometre of trunk route. The procurement of the contractor would take at least three years.

The earliest time for operationalisation of the project 2014,” he said.

The works minister, Eng. John Nasasira, said the traffic problems in Kampala were result of the concentration of most service in the city centre.

“We are glad the World Bank agreed to help us explore ways to minimise the traffic congestion in the city.”
