ONE person was shot dead and two injured in Kyenjojo district as the Police attempted to settle a dispute between residents and owners of a bio-diesel company.

The Police identified the deceased in the Sunday incident as Mucunguzi Katongole, 23, a resident of Rushayumbe village in Mpara sub-county.

Those injured were John Mande, 28, who was shot twice on his left arm and Musa Turigye, who was injured on both arms.
They were both admitted to Kyegegwa health centre in a critical condition.

The district Police boss, George Sabiiti, said yesterday that the trio were part of a mob of about 150 people that attacked Kazinga Police detachment, which was set up to guard a bio-diesel tree nursery.

Sabiiti said a Police officer, Moses Angelo, who sustained serious injuries, was in a coma at Kyegegwa health centre.

He said the mob burnt down houses of special Police constables and destroyed the nurseries.
The project is being run by Indian businessmen, whose names could not be established.

It was set up last year after the Government gave the investors the land that was formerly used as a refugee resettlement camp.

The local authorities say about 150,000 settlers on the land covering 14 villages of Mpara sub-county in Kyaka county had been threatened with eviction.

The area MP, Badru Katongole, said the residents were protesting the scheme, which they see as a threat to their livelihood.
