EDITOR—Over the last 10 years, Ugandan rugby has grown by leaps and bounds. The Rugby Cranes have brought pride to the nation, winning several major games and trophies, including the much coveted Africa Rugby Championship in 2007.

The Uganda Rugby Union remains one of the best organised sports governing bodies and local rugby matches now draw fans in their hundreds, despite the fact that the game receives negligible financial backing from the state.

Despite all these gains, rugby in Uganda is still considered a “sport for the posh”; and is virtually unknown outside elite circles. The pool of players for the local league is relatively small compared to African giants—Namibia, Morocco and Tunisia and even rivals Kenya. To increase its player base and give Ugandan rugby more exposure, the most fitting measure would be to have all upcoming international games this year played at Nakivubo or Namboole stadia.

The union would gain in increased gate collections and the games’ popularity would grow. Youngsters across the country would be inspired to play the game and the player base would inevitably grow.
