KCC FC will reclaim their status as league table leaders with a victory away to Iganga today.

However, to achieve that, the league champions will need a top-notch performance to survive the intensity of the fixture in a fortress that has proved unreceptive for them in past visits.

“It’s not going to be an easy game at the Ssaza grounds. They always put up their best performance there, so we will need resilience and experience to get the result we need,” KCC boss George Nsimbe stated.

KCC needed a last-gasp Sam Mubiru penalty to dispatch an Iganga side that had given as much to deserve a point from their match last season.

The champions were however not as fortunate in the season before when Iganga were deserved 2-1 winners.

KCC have suddenly looked vulnerable, and their 2-1 defeat to Maji recently literally intensified concerns over their abilities to contend with close title pursuers SC Villa. The Blues currently lead KCC by a point.

The league will then take a two-week break to allow the Cranes prepare for their high-profile friendly match against Sudan on Friday.

* In his days as a striker with English sides Rangers and West Bromwich, Bobby Williamson built a reputation as a nippy forward with great instinct in front of goal.

Now the Cranes coach intends to transform Cranes strikers, particularly Brian Umony and Robert Ssentongo, into like-minded front-men in Friday’s friendly against Sudan.

While Umony was an obvious candidate for the international trip, Ssentongo’s inclusion on the 18-man team expected to travel tomorrow, was not as straight forward on the evidence of Bruno Olobbo’s recent league performances. The Police striker was the only surprise omission from the international build-up that will coincidentally give KCC’s pair a chance to further develop their understanding ahead of next week’s CAF Champions League first leg match against SuperSport of South Africa.

“Robert’s (Sentongo) work rate is unbelievable. He works so hard and I am impressed,” Williamson stated.

Emma Okwi is the other striker competing for a first team place alongside Umony.

Umony, CECAFA top scorer with five goals, remains Cranes’ primary route to goal and is the bookmaker’s favourite to lead Uganda’s goal hunt in Khartoum.

In Ssentongo, Umony has found his right partner, with whom they combined to get the better of Mozambique side Ferroviaro in the Champions League first round stage.
