Public universities will admit government-sponsored students next month.

The Public Universities Joint Admissions Board meets next week to discuss the preliminary procedures for admission, which include assessing performance in last year’s A’levels.

The public universities are Makerere, Kyambogo, Busitema, Gulu and Mbarara.

The admissions board is chaired by Makerere University’s deputy vice-chancellor in charge of academic affairs. It has members from the public universities.

The Uganda National Examinations Board is expected to present the results to the joint admissions board later this week, a source said yesterday.

Another official of Makerere University said the board had started verifying the applications of the students who applied for the government-sponsorship scheme.

“We shall soon meet to determine the cut-off points,” the official said.

Of the 4,000 government scholarships, Makerere will take 2,000, Kyambogo 900, Mbarara 400, Gulu 500, while the newly-established Busitema in Busia district will take 200.

Some of the beneficiaries will be admitted under the district quota system in which 11 students from each of the 83 districts win scholarships.

Of the 4,000 government scholarships, 75% will be allocated to science courses and 25% to humanities.

Last year, at least 57,000 students sat A’levels, but private and public universities can only admit 20,000, leaving a whopping 27,000 ‘floating’.

Some private universities such as the Uganda Christian University, Mukono have started admitting students.

Kampala International University, Kampala University, Nkumba, Nkozi, Lugazi, Kabale, Kumi and other universities will begin admitting next week.
