UGANDAN footballer Alex Katete died of a massive heart attack in India, according to a postmortem report released on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old striker, who was a semi professional with India’s second division I-League side George Telegraph, died on Tuesday.

Katete had scored one goal in the side’s 2-1 defeat against Lajong SC on Monday.

George Telegraph president Subrata Dutta yesterday told one of India’s daily that there was no medical report to prove that Kalete had heart complications before.

“Everything was over before he could reach the hospital. The player was cleared in a mandatory medical test before the league,” Dutta said.

“It cannot be ascertained if he was suffering from any ailment previously as he was not carrying any medical records.

“It is extremely sad to lose a player in such a way.

“He was a good player as his performance in the opening match of the league shows,” Dutta added.

Kalete’s body is currently in Kolkata as the club authorities make arrangements for transportation to his family in Kampala.

Earlier on, another Ugandan footballer Oling Odong told The New Vision that everything possible was being made to send the body home as soon as possible.

“The next step is clearance with the police. As soon as this is done, the body will be transported home,” Odong explained yesterday.
