A fundraising drive to support the neurosurgery unit at Mulago Hospital, kicks off tomorrow. Justice Geoffrey Kiryabwire, who is spearheading the drive, said it was targeting to raise sh70m to reconstruct the dilapidated surgical ward.

The High Court judge said the activities were in memory of his father, the late. Prof. Jovan Kiryabwire, the first neuro-surgeon in East and Central Africa.

“If you are wheeled to ward 3A, you will become more sick due to overcrowding, an outdated laboratory and poor lighting,” said Kiryabwire. “Imagine what happens to the doctors who work there daily.”

He said the project would include painting and overhauling the plumbing system and the laboratory.
“We also plan to extend the oxygen and electricity points to the unit, supply information and communication technology equipment, construct an emergency theatre, improve the library and initiate staff welfare and training,” he explained.

Neurosurgery is a speciality for the brain and the nervous system.
Started in the early 1960s by the colonialists, the unit has only four neurosurgeons.

“The unit should become a centre of excellence since we attract patients from the region,” Kiryabwire said.
“That way we can retain and attract more professionals.”

The ward handles people with head and spinal injuries resulting from motor accidents, strokes, brain tumours, hydrocephalus and other nerve problems.

Kirabwire said the drive was organised by the Jovan and Mary Kiryabwire Foundation and that the Vice-President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, was expected to be the chief guest. He said the drive would be reviewed every three years.

The late Kiryabwire headed the neurosurgical unit for 20 years, retired in 1998 and passed away in 2004.
