VINCENT Byamukama’s sparkling form in the Bro Group Western Open on Sunday indicates he could again dominate the 2009 Uganda Golf Union (UGU) stroke-play championship.

Byamukama exhibited consistence that no one else measured up to –– firing two under par 68 in each of the two rounds to beat homeboy Lawrence Muhenda to the title by a massive five strokes.

“I have started well and I will work hard to keep the fire burning throughout the season,” Byamukama stated. Byamukama is confident he will do well in what should be his last season as an amateur.

The other contenders Frank Mugisa, Ian Odokonyero, Brian Mwesigwa and George Kituku who tied at 146, were a further five shots down the leader-board in the tournament sponsored by ThreeWays Shipping Services.

With players who excelled in the Kakira Open finishing out of the points, national champion Byamukama who missed the Jinja event now shares top spot with Grace Ocici at eight points.

Promising teenagers Muhenda, Ocici and Fred Wanzala are already proving inconsistent early in the season.

Even when Muhenda closed in to within one stroke of Byamukama on hole No. 15, the Entebbe golfer birdied two of the remaining holes while the Fort Portal teenager ‘chewed’ bogeys to back out of contention.

The new UGU competition rule which abolished the traditional groups A, B and C categories was greeted with excitement as the top eight in the subsidiary event in which the nett is considered, were all awarded prizes.
